Peregrine (Album)

$13.00

My album, “Peregrine”, shares a collection of songs that take me and the listener on a journey of sonic, spiritual, locational, and personal identity and heritage.

It harnesses numerology and kabbalistic gematriah, with its 13 songs for the 13 attributes of mercy and age of maturation in Judaism (and the number of full moons – a symbol of womanhood -- in a year as well as the card that really signifies rebirth in tarot), the Hatikvah (Our Hope) at 12 for the 12 tribes of Israel, the Avinu Malkeinu (Our Father, Our King) at the holy 7, the siren’s song that fuses Spanish and Hebrew in Ladino with my own composition for the first, and a song celebrating the tiny joys as the last.

Nine of the 13 songs are original. The other four (Avinu Malkeinu, Hatikvah, Willie o’ Winsbury, and a mashup of The Skye Boat Song with Loch Lomond) comprise Jewish and Celtic folk songs — honoring my own identity and some of my passions. Daniel Feldman plays drums on Avinu Malkeinu. Gloria Stokol took the harp photo.

I’ve not been to Cader Idris (The Chair of Idris), but as one of the seats (pun intended) of Northern Welsh Arthurian Legends and bardic tradition, it has long called to me. La Serena (The Siren) puts my original melody to a 15th c. Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) poem. Mi Chamocha (Who Is Like You?) puts my melody to the Hebrew prayer Miriam sings in Exodus. Sesonot Ze’eereem (Tiny Joys) sets my music to Ra’hel Bluwstein’s secular Hebrew poem of the same name. Spring and Autumn Mornings, Beckonings, Cader Idris, The Lady of…, and the Prelude are my original instrumental compositions. This album speaks of looking for and finding a home — within and without. A peregrine is a traveler, a religious pilgrim, and a swiftly-flying falcon (Stokol means falcon). But for those mentioned, I play (piano, guitar, drum, synths) and sing everything on this and did (recording, production, mixing, mastering, background photo, design) every part of it.

This is a deeply spiritual, musical, and lyrical journey. Enjoy the peregrinations with me!
